Movement and Ellipsis in Contrastive Left-Dislocation

چکیده
In this paper, I argue that the Germanic construction traditionally labeled Contrastive Leftdislocation1 (CLD) reduces to an interplay of movement and ellipsis in an underlyingly biclausal structure. The resulting analysis relies exclusively on independently motivated grammatical operations (A-movement in syntax and clausal ellipsis/deaccenting at PF), thereby achieving a reduction of constructional residue. The proposal is illustrated below for a simple case of CLD in German:

A Contrastive Study of Persian and English Written Discourse: Ellipsis in Realistic Novels
This study aspires to examine the concept of ellipsis by comparing and contrasting English and Persian written texts. For this purpose, three Persian novels and three English ones were selected. These novels were analyzed carefully; they were compared and contrasted for types and amount of ellipsis used, through a Chi-square analysis. The results of the data analysis revealed that various t...
متن کاملThe Left and Right Periphery in Dutch
This article discusses the information-structural status and the syntax of left and right dislocation constructions in Dutch. Four orthogonal information-structural features are proposed, and their distribution is systematically investigated. Furthermore, it is argued that hanging topic left dislocation, backgrounding right dislocation and afterthoughts are a particular kind of parenthesis. The...
متن کاملRight-dislocation as deletion
While the left clausal periphery has been in the center of attention of syntactic theory since the 1970s, the right periphery remains comparatively ill-understood. The goal of this paper is to rectify this situation. We argue that Germanic right-dislocation constructions are biclausal structures, the dislocated peripheral XP being a remnant of ellipsis in the second clause. This analysis accoun...
متن کاملDislocation and backgrounding
Dutch uses a variety of strategies to dislocate (or seemingly dislocate) elements from the main proposition. Next to potentially sentence-internal dislocations such as appositions and parentheses, the following types of peripheral dislocation exist: contrastive left-dislocation (CLD), hanging topic left-dislocation (HTLD), backgrounding right-dislocation (BRD), and afterthoughts (AFT); these ar...
متن کاملGapping: Movement or Deletion
Based on Johnson's (1994) across-the-board (ATB) movement analysis of Gapping, Agbayani and Zoerner (2004) argue that Gapping involves the application of sideward movement of the main verb out of coordinate structures. In this paper, I show that the verb movement analyses of Gapping are problematic. Ultimately, I maintain that Gapping is a discourse-oriented variant of TP ellipsis. More precise...
